As the new school year approaches, many of us start to consider learning something new or taking up a hobby. And with the football and rugby season kicking off, your thoughts might turn to starting up a new sport – or returning to a sport you used to play.
Sometimes it can be hard to commit to a new fitness regime, particularly as the nights draw in. But by joining a team, you have more impetus to keep going. After all, you don’t want to let your team-mates down.
So if you’re keen to get fitter, learn new skills and make new friends here are some local sports teams you might like to join.
Bitton Park Bowling Club
As you can guess by the name, Button Park Bowling Club is based in Bitton Park. All ages and abilities are welcome and the club competes in the Men’s Mid-Devon League, the Men’s Over 55s League and the South Devon Ladies Bowls League. Beginners can have a go at sessions with qualified coaches on a Monday morning.

Den Bowling Club
The Den Bowling Club is hard to miss. It’s right in the centre of town on the Den by the Pavilions. The club is open to all ages and abilities. If you’re not sure if bowling is the sport for you, there are free taster sessions every morning from 10am-12noon. The green is open to the public and footwear and woods hire is free. Coaching for beginners is also free. However, you will need to pay a rink fee. The club has two teams in the Over 55s leagues and plays lots of friendly fixtures throughout the year.

Teign Hockey Club is based at the Sandy Lane astroturf in Dawlish, by the leisure centre. It has three ladies teams, two mens teams, a mixed summer league and a growing junior section.

Based at Trinity School Tennis Centre, T-Birds is a welcoming netball club for ladies of any age or ability. Adult training takes place throughout the year with junior sessions taking place during term time.
